Suicide: The Bibles Takes On The Subject

Suicide: The Bibles Takes On The Subject

What Does The Holy Bible Say About Suicide?

When the media announced that Anthony Bourdain had committed suicide, the world was rather shocked.  He seemed to be a man that loved talking about cooking and had a hit television show that often aired on the CNN network.  He seemed to have everything going rather well for him. He had fame, fortune and a child.

The famous fashion designer Kate Spade also took her own life.  She was someone that seemed to have it all.  Fame, money, family and just about everything that someone would want to buy.  However, she took her own life.

If you read the headlines today, you will find that teen and youth suicide is on the rise.  What is making people want to kill themselves?  Why would someone think that suicide is a good option for them?  What can Christians learn about suicide and how to help prevent another person from wanting to take their own life?  We will cover these questions and many more.

Are We The Temple of the Holy Spirit?

Did you know that your body is a walking temple?  The Holy Spirit lives in the body of a Christian when you get saved and ask the Holy Spirit to come into your life.

The Holy Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, that anyone that destroys God’s temple (meaning your body), God will destroy him. God’s temple is holy. This means that we are not allowed to take our own life.  We cannot destroy what God created.

Even in Saint Peters worst times of suffering, torture and pain, he did not attempt suicide.  This is because he was living for Jesus and not for himself. When you are living for Jesus, you have given up the “things of this world”.  This includes money, fame, sexual immorality and much more.

You begin to see this earth as not your home. Your home is heaven.  Heaven is a place that a Christian will go to when he/she dies because they have accepted that Jesus Christ raised from the dead.

When you live for Jesus, you are aiming to please God every day. You wake up to thanking God for all that He has given to you.  You praise him for showing you the light when darkness may be all around you.  You live for spreading the good news that Jesus Christ died for our sins and want other souls to be saved on earth.

You don’t wake up in the morning worried about how you are going to afford that new sports car or million-dollar home. You instead are more concerned about helping your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ that are starving, suffering and having less than you.

You try to provide for them as best as you can.  Saint Peter and the other apostles weren’t worried about producing lucrative businesses.  When they left their homes to preach the gospel, they knew that their “earthly dreams” were over with.  They now had a new cause. Their cause was living for Jesus and spreading the good news of his death and resurrection.

The Holy Bible is clear that everything from money to relationships are unpredictable.  The only thing that stays consistent is God.  Therefore, devoting your life to living for Jesus works over devoting your life to getting wealthier and living for your own dreams.

We live in a time period in which money is king.  It seems to be on the minds and hearts of people all over the world.  Fancy cars, diamond rings, big homes all seem to be things that people want.  It’s hard to obtain these material possessions. You could have a million dollars today and lose it all tomorrow.

You should know that having a relationship with Jesus Christ is forever and God will always provide for your needs. God will never leave or abandon you.  He is always with you.

Before Being Saved, I Thought About Suicide Myself

Today’s media is talking about teen suicide being on the rise. Before accepting Jesus Christ as my savior when I was 13, I thought about committing suicide.  I didn’t see any other reason for living.  Sometimes, you feel like the world is stacked up against you.  When this happens, we often feel despair.

After giving myself to Jesus, I realized that I was no longer living for myself, but for God.  When you live for “the things of this world”, you feel like you don’t measure up for whatever reason. There will always be someone that is wealthier than you are or better looking.  This world is full of temptation and desire.

Living for Jesus made me realize that I am now on a whole new mission in life.  My goal is to help save other lost souls and to prepare myself for entering God’s kingdom when I die.  I realized that this world will eventually end.  Whatever I acquire in this life will eventually go away.  I can’t take anything with me when I die.

When you have accepted Jesus Christ into your heart, the Lord promises to never leave you. Read Psalm 34:17-20.  The Holy Bible says that when the righteous cries out to God, he delivers them out of their trouble.

We live in a confused world today.  Many Christians and non-Christians alike are living in sin and don’t even know it.  They are doing actions that are contrary to Holy living.  Many pastors are teaching that its okay to live in sin because Jesus will forgive you anyway.

However, the wages of sin are death and we destroy our own souls through sinful living.  If you walk through life living in sin, we will experience despair.  It’s because God stays away from the wicked.  God does not tolerate sin.  He expects you to repent of your sins and turn to him.  If you live in sin and continue to repeat the same sin repeatedly, you are not living for God, but for yourself.

In Ecclesiastes 7:17, the Holy Bible reminds is that we can die before our time because of wicked living.  It says, “Why should you die before your time?”  In order to learn what wicked living is, you need to study the Bible.  Rape and murder are not the only two ways of wickedness.

Greed, envy, jealousy, fornication is also considered to be sinful living.  A person may be living wickedly without even knowing it.  When someone lives in sin, they feel far away from God and they often feel that God is not listening to them.

Before coming to Christ, all Christians realized that they were a sinner and needing to ask for God’s forgiveness.  If you have not asked Jesus Christ into your heart, its time to do so today.  This is the only way to salvation.

Your Body Does Not Belong to You.  You Can’t Destroy It.

When you become a Christian, your body belongs to Jesus (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).  The Holy Bible tells us that we were bought with a price.  The price was Jesus death on the cross.  It now means that God owns you.

The Bible tells us to bring glory to God with our body. Praise him in worship, prayer and telling others about God’s love.  Even if you are the worst sinner, when you give your life to Jesus, your sins are washed away and forgiven. You can now ask God for help and he will forgive you.

You cannot commit suicide because you cannot destroy something that God owns.  You are no longer in charge of your own body.  Jesus has now authority over you.  You no longer should be living for yourself and “being who you are”.  Instead, you should change your mind to living the way that God wants you to live.

Does God Have Future Plans for You?

The Holy Bible tells us in Jeremiah 29:11 that God has plans for us.  He is a living, breathing and loving God that has plans in store for us.  If you think that your life is not worth living, you are wrong.  God says that he has a plan for you.

You may not be able to see the light for your own life right now. Perhaps you are stuck in darkness. It’s most likely because you think that you may have been doing what God wanted you to do, but you did what you wanted to do.  You were living for yourself instead of God.

How does your life measure up to Peter or Paul the Apostle?  They lived solely for the kingdom of God.  They realized that their life was not their own and now belonged to God. They dedicated their lives to saving souls and not living for building a business or dressing in the finest clothing. What have you given up for Jesus and what are your plans?

Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart.  Where is your trust these days? Is it with God or are you trusting that money will bail you out in times of trouble?  If you have no money, do you believe that you are screwed, or do you believe that God has another plan to get you out of your trouble?

You Cannot Murder

In Exodus 20:13, the Holy Bible tells us that we cannot murder.  This means that taking your own life would be murder.

What makes a person want to kill themselves?  Is it shame for something that you have done?  Perhaps you lived a sinful past and now the memories of what you have done haunt you.  Know that repentance is what God wants.  Even though the world may not forgive you for what you have done, Jesus does and has a place in his kingdom for people that repent of their sins.

Why is God Doing This to Me?

Instead of blaming God for your life troubles, blame Satan. The devil is the one causing you all your problems.  Please read John 10:10. This Bible verse tells us that Satan comes to steal, destroy and kill.  Yes, Satan is out to destroy your life.  He doesn’t want to see you living.  His hope is to see you dead.  If you are feeling suicidal, its because Satan is trying to destroy you. When you turn to God, he comes to your rescue.

It wasn’t God that was trying to destroy Job in the Old Testament. Satan asked God for permission to destroy the life of Job. In return, God told him that he could do what he wanted to him but could not take his life.

Job had no idea what was going on when Satan was destroying his life.  He asked God what he had done to deserve this. He also had friends that falsely accused him.  Yet, in the end, God restored him and gave him back everything that God tried to take from him.

We create our own lives and often the trouble that falls upon us is from the sins that we have committed.

How to Start Living for Jesus

For starters, renew your mind.  The Bible tells us in Romans 12:2 that we should have a renewing of the mind. Before receiving salvation, you were living in a world that was lost. You wanted to do what you felt was right in your heart.

Now you need to read the Holy Bible and find out how God wants you to live.  Perhaps you once thought that it was okay to be in a street gang, but now see that Jesus doesn’t want that for you.

You may be living a gay lifestyle and realizing the New Testament says to not live this way and to repent.  You need to focus on what you are doing right now and learn to do it all God’s way.

Can Guilt Make Someone Commit Suicide?

Judas Iscariot committed suicide after betraying Jesus Christ.  He couldn’t live with his guilt and shame anymore.  In many suicidal cases, guilt and shame of your lifestyle will often cause someone to commit suicide. It’s because you can’t believe what you have done, or you feel ashamed that people will find out about it.

Jeffrey Epstein committed immoral acts and couldn’t live with the shame of being exposed while he was on trial.  He chose suicide over facing people in court.  Instead of saying that he was sorry for what he has done, he chose to take his life.

Judas refused to accept Jesus Christ as his savior.  After spending around three years with Jesus and witnessing all his miracles, he still betrayed him. His heart was hardened against the true savior of the world.

When a person’s heart is hardened against God, they will often choose suicide because they feel like there is no more hope.  People that commit suicide will do so because they are not believing in Jesus Christ with all their heart.  Instead, they are still living for themselves.

Should You Live One Day at a Time?

Most people that are thinking about taking their own lives imagines that everyday will be the same for them without any hope.  The Holy Bible reminds us in Matthew 6:34 that we are to live one day at a time and not worry about tomorrow.

If you have no friends or family in your life, know that the body of Christ is your family. Get involved in your local church and you will find that making friends is rather easy.  When you give your life to Jesus, the church becomes your family. You are no longer alone in this world. Instead of living for yourself, you know live to serve others.  There are so many people in the world that you can be helping. Your life will never be dull and boring. Always give and be thankful for what God has given to you.

Did A King Over Israel Commit Suicide?

King Zimri ruled over Israel for 7 days.  However, he was a man that sinned against God and had a heart that was grieving because of the sins that he committed against Israel. He committed suicide in 1 Kings 16:15-20.  He burned the kings house over him, and he died in it.  He couldn’t live with the guilt of his sins.  He also didn’t have Jesus to turn to because in the Old Testament, Jesus was not here yet.

Once again, we see suicide as being a form of a guilty conscious.  Praise God that today, we have Jesus to forgive our sins. We no longer must live in our guilt. We can now find salvation in Christ.
